What:  Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee meeting


When:  1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19


Where:  Human Services Building, Room 160, 500 Summer Street N.E., Salem


Agenda:  Discussion of administrative issues and future speakers and meeting agendas.  David Nunenkamp, Deputy Secretary, California Food and Agriculture, will provide a telephone presentation on California's experience with biopharming.


Background:  The Governor and the 2005 Senate charged the Oregon departments of Agriculture and Human Services to convene a Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee  to develop a consensus policy recommendation to the governor regarding biopharmaceuticals produced in human food or animal feed crops.


Biopharming is the production of pharmaceutical proteins or other materials in genetically engineered plants and animals.


The Committee has ten standing members and is chaired by Jim Rue, State Board of Agriculture, with Keith Harcourt, Public Health Advisory Board, serving as vice-chair.  The State Board of Agriculture and the Public Health Advisory Board are equally represented, along with two independent scientists and two non-voting ex-officio members representing the Oregon Department of Agriculture and Department of Human Services.


Future meetings will be held monthly, with the location of meetings to alternate between Portland and Salem.
