Public Meeting Notice:

Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee meets Monday in Salem

What:  Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee meeting.


When:  Monday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.


Where: Conference Room D, Oregon Department of Agriculture Building, 635 Capitol St. N.E., Salem.


Agenda:  Administrative business, followed by a presentation from Dean Metcalfe, M.D., on the risk of allergenic reactions posed by biopharmaceutical products. Metcalfe is chief of the Allergic Diseases Laboratory at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Md. A policy discussion by task force members will follow. Public comments will be taken between 2:50 and 3:00 pm.


Background:  The governor and the 2005 Senate charged the Oregon departments of Agriculture and Human Services with convening a Biopharming Ad Hoc committee to develop a consensus policy recommendation to the governor regarding biopharmaceuticals produced in human food or animal feed crops.


Biopharming is the production of pharmaceutical proteins or other materials in genetically engineered plants and animals.


The Committee has 10 standing members and is chaired by Jim Rue, State Board of Agriculture, with Keith Harcourt, Public Health Advisory Board, serving as vice-chair. The State Board of Agriculture and the Public Health Advisory Board are equally represented, along with two independent scientists and two non-voting ex-officio members representing the Oregon Department of Agriculture and Department of Human Services.


Meetings are held monthly, with the location of meetings alternating between Portland and Salem.
