Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee meets Monday in Portland
What: Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee meeting.
When: Monday, July 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Room 120B, Portland State Office Building, 800 N.E. Oregon St., Portland.
Agenda: Introduction and opening remarks and approval of June minutes, followed by a review of committee's progress and the direction of future meetings. Also scheduled is a policy discussion by task force members. Public comments will be taken between 2:50 and 3 p.m.
Background: The governor and the 2005 Senate charged the Oregon departments of Agriculture and Human Services with convening a Biopharming Ad Hoc Committee to develop a consensus policy recommendation to the governor regarding biopharmaceuticals produced in human food or animal feed crops.
Biopharming is the production of pharmaceutical proteins or other materials in genetically engineered plants and animals.
The Committee has 10 standing members and is chaired by Jim Rue, State Board of Agriculture, with Keith Harcourt, Public Health Advisory Board, serving as vice chair. The State Board of Agriculture and the Public Health Advisory Board are equally represented, along with two independent scientists and two non-voting ex-officio members representing the Agriculture and Human Services Departments.
Meetings are held monthly, with the location of meetings alternating between Portland and Salem.
