Rep. Sara Gelser honored for leadership on disability issues
Rep. Sara Gelser, D-Corvallis, has received the "Champion Award" from the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities in recognition of her leadership to address the needs of children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.
Currently serving her first full term in the Oregon Legislature, Gelser is sponsoring legislation to expand education and employment opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Her signature legislation, "The Welcome Home Package," will make it possible for children with disabilities and complex medical needs to grow up at home with their families, rather than in foster care or nursing homes.
"As a freshman legislator, Rep. Gelser has quickly established herself as an effective and respected leader," said Bill Lynch, Executive Director of the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities.
Dr. Bruce Goldberg, Director of the Oregon Department of Human Services, presented Gelser with the award at a ceremony this week celebrating Developmental Disabilities Month.
This year's statewide theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, "Every Child Deserves a Family Home," was inspired by Gelser's "Welcome Home" legislation. A poster commemorating that theme was unveiled at the event.
