Laboratory Analytical Storage and Retrieval Database (LASAR)

Frequently-asked questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title:
Laboratory Analytical Storage and Retrieval Database (LASAR)

Abstract:
The Oregon DEQ Laboratory Analytical Storage and Retrieval Database (LASAR) provides access to a comprehensive collection of environmental monitoring data. Information regarding projects, monitoring locations, sample collections, and analytical results are available throughout Oregon. Air and water quality, sediment, soil, hazardous waste, biological tissue and biological population data are included in LASAR.

Supplemental information:
The LASAR database was created and is maintained at the Oregon DEQ Laboratory. The LASAR web access application was created and is maintained by Oregon DEQ Managment Services Division. This is primary data provided by DEQ.

Why was the data set created?

The purpose is to make environmental data collected by DEQ for program needs or submitted to DEQ under agreement for contractual obligations or as volunteered for consideration in policymaking available to the public.

How was the data set created?

  1. Where did the data come from?

  2. What changes have been made?

Date: Unknown (change 1 of 1)
All analytical data are entered into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Data verification and validation is performed in LIMS prior to release of the data to the Laboratory Analytical Storage And Retrieval (LASAR) system. All QA/QC data, including replicate, blank, and spike samples, are maintained in a QA archive at the DEQ Laboratory, rather than in the LASAR system. LIMS, LASAR, and the QA archive are maintained and operated by the DEQ Laboratory Division. Data from LASAR (a transactional database ) are routinely transformed into a data warehouse maintained by DEQ Management Services Division to make available to the public via the LasarWeb application.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Samples are collected and analyzed using methodologies specified in Quality Assurance Project Plans and Sampling & Analysis Plans, as per the Oregon DEQ Quality Management Plan. These plans specify quality assurance and quality control protocol.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    None
