Residential Care Facility for Residents with Severe Disabilities

Worksite Redesign Technical Advisory Project

Extended Family Model Floor Plan

The Extended Family Group Home Prototype is designed to accommodate up to five residents with varying degrees of disabilities. Intended for corner lots, the L-shaped plan supports two living areas separated by a shared office area and garage. Each living area has an entry porch, common living and dining areas, lockable kitchen and laundry rooms, and either two or three bedrooms and a bathroom off a private hall.

A clear separation between living and sleeping zones of the house addresses the need for individual space in a group home environment. The rooms of the house are simply configured and well proportioned, with generous windows for natural light and views.

Located off wide hallways, the bathrooms are designed to accommodate all levels of disabilities and to protect staff from worksite injuries. The large open rooms allow easy access to all fixtures, especially important when residents require staff assistance. Tile wainscot on walls and non-skid tile on floors are easy to clean and disinfect, and create a fully waterproof space. Operable windows with obscure glass provide natural light and ventilation.

Recessed light fixture provide general room lighting and specific lighting at plumbing fixtures. Walls sub-sheeted with 1/2" plywood from floor to ceiling are durable and allow for secure attachment of bars and lifts as needed.
