Oregon State Penitentiary Electrical Problems (Update)

The Oregon State Penitentiary is currently experiencing electrical problems. Visiting is closed until further notice while we trouble shoot the problem.

Update:

On September 20, 2010, at approximately 3:30 a.m. the Oregon State Penitentiary experienced a momentary disruption of electrical power due to underground high voltage power lines failing and tripping a breaker. The disruption left the North end of the institution without power. As a precaution visiting was cancelled for the day while the problem was diagnosed. The Penitentiary experienced a brief power outage at 8:30 a.m. while troubleshooting the electrical system. An outside contractor arrived mid-morning with specialized equipment to assist. Security systems and inmate housing units were not affected. The institution schedule was temporarily modified to accommodate the electrical problems.

Penitentiary staff in conjunction with an outside contractor isolated the power to the affected area and brought the system back up at 3:00 p.m. Penitentiary staff will continue to work with outside contractors to permanently fix the problem.

Visiting will resume on Tuesday, September 21 at 7:00 a.m.
