Oregon Department of Corrections Receives $600,000 PREA Grant

We are pleased to announce the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC), in collaboration with The Moss Group, was awarded a $600,000 grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The grant will aid the DOC in preparation for the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Standards implementation.

The goal of the PREA Program is to assist priority facilities in implementing prevention, identification, and response mechanisms that will reduce the incidence of sexual abuse in confinement environments.

"The Oregon Department of Corrections has been a national leader in embracing and implementing the goals and standards of PREA's zero tolerance for sexual assault in prison. As a system we have benefited from our early adoption of PREA standards in making our institutions safer for staff and inmates," said DOC Director Max Williams.

The Oregon Department of Corrections will continue to implement PREA program design elements that include policy and practice review, revision, and implementation; preventative infrastructure and technology enhancements; offender education; victim support services; leadership, organizational culture and performance; data collection and performance measurement; planning, analysis, and staffing support, and evaluation.

The funds will enhance what's already been initiated and provide sexual safety assessments at five selected institutions. The monies will also allow DOC to prepare for the audit component of the PREA Standards which is expected to be signed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder towards the end of the year.

"This grant is important recognition of the commitment we have made thus far to a standard of zero tolerance, and of the additional work we all must do in order to make that goal a reality." Williams said.
