SRCI placed on modified lockdown status today

Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) was placed on modified operations, Friday, November 11, 2011.  All areas of the institution are running under normal operations with the exception of Complex Three, one of the institution's general population living areas.

Visiting for the entire facility, including Complex Three, will run as normal.

The modified operations stem from an incident that occurred on the Complex Three yard at approximately 9:40 a.m. Staff responded to a mutual inmate fight that ended quickly when the two inmates involved were given verbal directives to stop fighting.

Shortly after the two inmates had been removed from the yard, a group of approximately 29 other inmates became involved in a group altercation. When the large group of inmates refused staff directives to stop fighting, the officer assigned to the Complex Three tower fired a warning shot into the designated warning pit. When inmates still refused directives to stop fighting, OC Spray was administered, at which point the fight ended.

All inmates involved in the group disturbance, were escorted to Disciplinary Segregation without further incident. There were no serious injuries to the inmates or staff. At this time, the cause of the group disturbance is unknown. State Police were notified and an investigation has begun.

Inmates in Complex Three are restricted to their cells for the remainder of the day. Although the Complex Three inmates will have visiting as normal they will not have access to the phones in their units due to the cell restrictions.

Updates will be available regarding the modified operations via the SRCI Information Line at 541-881-INFO (4636).
