WARNING SHOT FIRED AT SNAKE RIVER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION

At approximately 8:13 p.m. (MST), Wednesday, Aug. 22, three inmates engaged in a fight on a recreation yard at Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI). The inmates refused verbal directives to stop fighting, at which time staff administered pepper spray. The inmates continued fighting and a warning shot was fired from the tower overlooking the yard. Upon the warning shot, the inmates stopped fighting.

One inmate received non-life threatening injuries and received medical treatment on site. Oregon State Police are investigating the incident.

The complex in which the fight happened was placed on modified operations until approximately 9 a.m. this morning. As of then, the institution has been operating as normal.

SRCI is a multi-security facility that houses approximately 3,000 adults in custody. It is Oregon's largest correctional institution and is located in Malheur County near the Oregon-Idaho border.
