Deer Ridge Correctional Institution prepares to resolve electrical issues

In an effort to repair damaged power lines, Deer Ridge Correctional Institution will conduct a planned power outage at its minimum facility all day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5, and all day Wednesday, June 6. The eight to ten hour shutdown will begin at 8 a.m. each day, rendering some institution systems inoperable while crews replace damaged emergency power cables and conduit.

Recent electrical issues prompted Department of Corrections and contract staff to assess the electrical system. Last week, staff discovered two damaged power cables and conduit. The damage appears to be the result of an auger that penetrated too deep into the ground while contractors dug a fence post hole during original construction of the minimum facility.

DOC is working with Aspen Ridge Electric to complete the repairs. Kirby Nagelhout was the prime contractor during original construction of the minimum facility and has agreed to pay for the repairs. At this point, DOC does not anticipate temporarily transferring inmates to the medium facility, which is one contingency plan should repairs require a lengthy power shutdown.

DRCI will be on modified operations during the power shutdown Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no safety risk to staff or inmates.
