Baker County

Baker County is contained in HGO Region 8 and is home to Powder River Correctional Facility (PRCF) which is located in Baker City.

History 
Union County and Malheur County were set off from Baker County in 1864 and 1887 respectively. It is named for Edward Dickinson Baker, a senator from Oregon who was killed at Ball's Bluff, a battle of the American Civil War. The county seat for Baker County is Baker City. ​​​​
 
Benton County

The county was named after Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. senator who advocated U.S. control over the Oregon Country. The county seat for Benton County is Corvallis.

The county was named after the Native Americans living in the area, the Clackamas Indians, who were part of the Chinookan people. The county seat for Clackamas County is Oregon City.

History 
The county is named for the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who lived along the coast of the Pacific Ocean prior to European settlement. The county seat for Clatsop County is Astoria.

The county was created in 1916 and was named for the Deschutes River, which itself was named by French-Canadian trappers of the early 19th century. The county seat for Deschutes County is Bend.

The county was established in 1885 and is named for Cornelius Gilliam, who commanded the forces of the provisional government of Oregon after the Whitman Massacre. The county seat of Gilliam County is Condon.

Established in 1889, the county is named in honor of William S. Harney, a military officer of the period, who was involved in the Pig War and popular in the Pacific Northwest. The county seat of Harney County is Burns.

According to Oregon Geographic Names, the county is probably named after a stream in the area called Josephine Creek, which in turn is probably named after Virginia Josephine Rollins Ort. The county seat of Josephine County is Grants Pass.
 
Klamath County

The county was named for the tribe of Native Americans living in the area at the time the first white explorers entered the region, the Klamaths. The county seat of Klamath County is Klamath Falls.

Malheur County

History 
The county was named for Malheur River, which flows through it. The county seat for Malheur County is Vale. 
 
Marion County

Marion County is located in HGO Region 4 and is home to several ODOC facilities including Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP), Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI), Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI) and Mill Creek Correctional Faclity (MCCF). Marion County is also the location of the Dome Building, the main headquarters for the ODOC. All these various facilities are located in Salem.

It was originally named the Champooick District, after Champoeg, a meeting place on the Willamette River. On September 3, 1849, the territorial legislature renamed it in honor of Francis Marion, a Continental Army general of the American Revolutionary War. The county seat for Marion County is Salem.

History 
The county is named for one of its first white settlers, Jackson L. Morrow, who was a member of the state legislature when the county was created. The county seat for Morrow County is Heppner.

The county was likely named after Native American people first recorded in the journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Mulknomans, who lived in a village on the east side of present-day Sauvie Island. (An alternative theory holds that Multnomah is a corruption of nematlnomaq, meaning down river.) The county seat for Multnomah County is Portland. ​

The county is named for the Umatilla River. The county seat for Umatilla County is Pendleton.

The county is named for the town of Union, which is located within its boundaries. The county seat for Union County is La Grande.

History 
According to Oregon Geographic Names, the origins of the county's name are uncertain, with the most likely explanation being that it is derived from the Nez Perce term for a structure of stakes (a weir) used in fishing. An alternative explanation is that Wallowa is derived from a Nez Perce word for "winding water". The journals of Lewis and Clark Expedition record the name of the Wallowa River as Wil-le-wah. The county seat for Wallowa County is Enterprise. 
 
Wasco County

The county is named for a local tribe of Native Americans, the Wasco, a Chinook tribe who lived on the south side of the Columbia River. The county seat for Wasco County is The Dalles. 
 
Washington County

History 
Originally named Twality in 1843, the territorial legislature renamed it for the first president of the United States, George Washington, in 1849. The county seat for Washington County is Hillsboro.
 
Wheeler County

It is named in honor of Henry H. Wheeler, an early settler who owned a farm near Mitchell. Wheeler County is known for having a large depository of fossils, the most extensive in the state. The county seat for Wheeler County is Fossil. 
 
Yamhill County

History 
According to Oregon Geographic Names, the origin of the name is uncertain, but is probably from an explorer's name for a local Native American tribe, the Yamhill, who are part of the North Kalapuyan family. The county seat for Yamhill County is McMinnville.
