Attending the Academy

Basic Police
Student Check List
  • Review and bring Student Rules and Regulations.
  • Arrive at the academy dorms (Building "E") at 4:00 p.m. the Sunday prior to class starting. Please have in hand a navy blue cotton or cotton blend t-shirt (no logos or pocket), black duty boots or shoes, duty belt, and ballistic vest. 
  • Parking is available only in designated "student parking" areas. (Map inside cover of Student Rules and Regulations.)
  • Bring a field notebook.
  • Bring four navy blue cotton or cotton blend t-shirts (no pockets, no logos), two long sleeve t-shirts (neutral color, no pockets, no logos), navy blue or black sweatpants or shorts, and two pair of running shoes (one pair for outdoor running and one pair of new athletic shoes with non marking soles, only to be worn in the skills venue), a water bottle, and a sports mouth guard.
  • Bring an agency issued or plain solid black waist length jacket for inclement weather.
  • Bring personal items such as soap, towels, and bathrobes; refer to Student Rules and Regulations.
  • Bring duty weapon & firearm cleaning supplies, ballistic vest, leather/nylon gear and magazines/speed loaders, handcuffs, handcuff key, handcuff case, pack set (radio) carrier on duty belt, flashlight and baton.  Be sure your equipment is in good working order.
  • Weapons storage; refer to Student Rules and Regulations    
  • Personal laptop computers may be brought to the Academy.
  • Student Emergency Data Sheet.
  • Bring dress uniform.
  • Optional gear for range: knee pads, rain gear, gloves etc.

Optional Training
In addition to the required 640 hour Basic Police Course, DPSST offers optional classes after hours for officers/deputies attending the academy.  This allows us to provide additional training for the students to sharpen skills that they learn while at DPSST.  Listed below are the topics that we offer and the number of associated hours:
 
  • Incident Command System 100, 200, 700, 800 Training: 12 Hours (web- based training, .3 CEU's per class)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Training: 8 Hours (web-based training, non-credit class) 
  • Radar: 8 Hours
  • Lidar: 4 Hours
  • Auto Theft Investigations: 2 Hours
  • Introduction to Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs: 2 Hours
  • Tactical Ethics - Prospective on Profiling: 3 Hours
  • Community Policing Project: Up to 15 hours throughout 16 weeks 
 
These classes are voluntary and are not required for certification.  F-6 forms are provided at the training so students may receive topical credit, but otherwise student attendance is not taken.  Since there may be contractual and overtime issues for your agency, we request that you fill out the attached form so that we know you are fully aware of your officer/deputy’s workload during their time at DPSST.  DPSST will not allow students to participate in optional training without a signed copy of the Optional Training Release Form.

  • Bring handcuffs, handcuff key and handcuff case.
  • Bring four navy blue cotton or cotton blend t-shirts (no pockets, no logos), navy blue or black sweatpants, and two pair of running shoes (one pair for outdoor running and one pair of new athletic or wrestling shoe with non marking soles, only to be worn in the skills venue), a water bottle, and a sports mouth guard.
  • Bring an agency issued or plain solid black waist length jacket for inclement weather.
  • Bring personal items such as soap, towels, and bathrobes; refer to Student Rules and Regulations.
  • Weapons storage; refer to Student Rules and Regulations.
  • Student Emergency Data Sheet.
  • If attending the firearms course: Department issued weapon, three magazines, magazine holder, ballistic vest, tactical flashlight, pack set (radio) carrier on duty belt, keepers, NO AMMO.
  • Please refer to the Student Rules and Regulations for a complete list of equipment needs.
 

Optional Training
In addition to the required 160 hour Basic Parole & Probation course, DPSST offers optional classes for officers/deputies attending the academy. This allows us to provide additional training for students to sharpen their skills that they learn while at DPSST. Listed below are the topics that we offer for Parole and Probation students and the number of associated hours:
 
  • Outlaw Motorcycle Club Overview: 2 hours
  • Professional Boundaries: 2 hours
 
These classes are voluntary and are not required for certification. F-6 forms are provided at the training so students may receive topical credit, but otherwise student attendance is not taken. Telecommunications

  • DPSST issued BDU's will be worn during all academic instruction. 
  • Bring personal items such as soap, towels, and bathrobes; refer to Student Rules and Regulations.

In addition to the required 80hours, DPSST offers optional classes after hours for officers/deputies attending the academy.  This allows us to provide additional training for the students to sharpen skills that they learn while at DPSST.  Listed below are the topics that we offer and the number of associated hours:
 
  • Incident Command System 100, 200, 700, 800 Training: 12 Hours (web- based training, .3 CEU's per class) 
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Training: 8 Hours (web-based training, non-credit class) 
  • Intoxilyzer: Two evening classes per week. Each session lasts 4 hours
 
These classes are voluntary and are not required for certification.  F-6 forms are provided at the training so students may receive topical credit, but otherwise student attendance is not taken.  Since there may be contractual and overtime issues for your agency, we request that you fill out the attached form so that we know you are fully aware of your officer/deputy’s workload during their time at DPSST.  DPSST will not allow students to participate in optional training without a signed copy of the Optional Training Release Form.
