South Slough offers a variety of programs for all ages to develop a better understanding of estuaries and coastal watersheds.

Description

​This collection is from some of my special places here in the Pacific Northwest. Spring is now in the air, so come walk with me through the garden as we poke our noses into flowers and smell the sweet scents of spring. Watch a dragonfly land on the end of shovel handle. Take a stroll on our Oregon beaches and feel the sand between your toes. Hike into the forest and mountains for some fresh air and scenic spaces. There are so many sights to see.​

Description

Join South Slough for a very special program at the Charleston Marine Life Center! We will have the center to ourselves for an hour as we explore the amazing lives of marine mammals in our area. When the center opens at 11 AM we encourage families to stay and explore all of the exciting displays throughout the building. Meet at the Marine Life Center in Charleston.​

The Columbia River was once among the most productive salmon fisheries on the planet. But now, many populations are already extinct and thirteen more are endangered. Their story is one of the nature stories of our time, an object lesson that forces us to examine our conservation efforts in a new light. We’ll provide the big screen, awesome sound system and fresh popcorn.

Explore five miles of beautiful South Slough on a trail that flows with the tide. Bring your own kayak or canoe, paddles, PFDs, water and lunch. Feet and legs may get wet and muddy at launch points. Driver and shuttle will be provided.​

Have a sibling/child that is too old for Tide of the Toddlers? Come join us as a family while toddlers are in the classroom your older kiddos can do nature inspired yoga on the lawn. This program focuses on teaching basic yoga and mindfulness to children ages 6-12! Yoga mats will be provided. Meet at South Slough’s Interpretative Center.​

Want to attract more native pollinators to your property or start your own pollinator garden? Come learn all about mason bees! This bee does not form a hive, is not aggressive, and is beneficial for pollination. With an eye toward keeping them close by, you will build your own customized mason bee house to provide shelter for these gentle, solitary insects. To help assure a successful season, each kit includes 10 native blue mason bee cocoons.​

Description

Join Norma Kline, Extension Forester for Coos and Curry counties and Hannah Schraeger, South Slough Stewardship Coordinator, for a walk in the woods at South Slough Reserve. We will take a walk on the trail system and explore and discuss this unique coastal forest ecosystem including native tree and plant species, forest health issues and invasive species management. Description

This class will help you to understand herbs and the role they can play in your life from natural cleaning products to your mental and physical well-being. We will discuss the different ways to use, grow, and harvest. There will be handouts and each participant will receive an herbal plant at the class to get you started on cleaning the chemicals out of your lives. This course will set the groundwork for the additional herbal classes to follow. Meet at South Slough’s Interpretative Center.​
