Hundreds of state employees joined with the Portland Trailblazers on February 25, 2011, for Public Employee Appreciation Night and were treated to an overtime thriller, the introduction of new forward Gerald Wallace to the Blazer family and an incredible half-time, half-court shot that netted one lucky fan a new truck.

Along with the festivities – part of the Blazers annual night honoring state and local workers – the Blazers also presented the Governor’s State Employees Food Drive with a generous donation, to top off their cumulative contributions to $5000.

Each year, the Blazers have a special night recognizing state and local employees with a portion of each ticket sale donated to the Governor’s State Employees Food Drive.

“Just as state employees are part of the big Oregon family, so are the Blazers,” said 2011 Governor’s State Employees Food Drive Chair Mary Jane Schaffer. “Together, the combined Blazer donations represents over 25,000 pounds of food for hungry Oregonians. It’s a major part of reaching our goal of 4.5 million pounds of food in our month-long drive. We are very proud to partner with the Blazers to help fight hunger in Oregon. And we sure picked the right game to attend.”

Along with representatives from several public employee groups, Scott Shearer, a food drive committee member, was on hand to receive the Blazers donation at a half-time ceremony honoring public employees.

“This is just another example of how state employees reach out to help our fellow Oregonians. The all-volunteer work of this food drive touches every corner of Oregon. It’s a great way for us to spend our entertainment dollars in a way that provides a helping hand to Oregonians,” said Shearer. “I’m really proud to be a part of it and appreciate my fellow workers and the Blazers for joining together to make this night a great success.”
