Governor Kitzhaber praises legislative action on workforce training programs

(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber today praised the Oregon House of Representatives for passing Senate Bill 1566, which will modernize the state’s job training programs and improve coordination between state agencies that oversee workforce programs. The bill was passed by the Oregon Senate earlier in February.

“Our efforts must be focused on ensuring that Oregon’s economy creates living wage jobs and the educational pathways that lead to those jobs,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “This bill will help ensure Oregon’s job training system is better coordinated to meet workers’ and employers’ needs across the state. I look forward to signing it.”

The bill, developed using recommendations from an advisory workgroup, will increase coordination of state and local services involving education, employment, and economic development to improve outcomes for Oregonians seeking work and businesses seeking employees. The bill also assigns new duties to the Oregon Workforce Investment Board and directs it to work with local workforce investment boards to increase efficiencies and align services with local labor market needs.
