Governor Kitzhaber names Heidi Moawad to be Public Safety Policy Advisor

April 4, 2013

(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber today announced the appointment of Heidi Moawad as his Policy Advisor for Public Safety.

“Heidi’s extensive legal background, often focused on protecting the most vulnerable members of society, has helped her develop a keen understanding of public safety,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “As we look to invest in proven crime prevention and community corrections strategies instead of additional prison beds, I look forward to her contributions and insight to help keep our communities safe for all Oregonians.”
With more than 13 years experience practicing law, Ms. Moawad comes to the Governor’s Office from Multnomah County, where she has served as Deputy District Attorney and was most recently assigned to the Multi-Disciplinary Team handling both criminal felony and juvenile dependency cases involving child assaults and homicides. Prior to that, she received a one-year special assignment to work exclusively on a high-profile missing child case. Ms. Moawad’s legal experience includes major felonies, and she has handled cases on aggravated murders, vehicular homicides and assaults, robberies and burglaries, animal abuse, and drug use. She previously served as the Counsel to the Judiciary Committee in the Oregon State Legislature.
Ms. Moawad earned her J.D. from University of Oregon Law School and is a graduate of Whittier College in California, where she earned a B.A. in Political Science and Theatre.
