Big day for Oregon education

SB 5519 passes House; HB 3231, HB 3232, HB 3233 and HB 3234 pass Senate
(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber released the following statement after passage of key education legislation in both chambers of the Oregon Legislature:
“I commend the House for passing a K-12 budget today and the Senate for passing strategic education investment legislation.
The K-12 budget will allow school districts to begin planning for the next school year and supports our goal of delivering better results for students and more resources for teachers. However, the revitalization and restoration of public education in Oregon isn’t just about a K-12 budget number. It’s about making smart, strategic investments that give us the greatest leverage for improvement, including kindergarten readiness, third grade reading proficiency, high school completion, STEM, workforce readiness, and teacher effectiveness.
Last week, the House passed those important strategic education investments and aligned early learning and youth development programs from multiple agencies. By establishing the Early Learning and Youth Development Divisions within the Department of Education, we can better ensure that young Oregonians have the supports they need to enter kindergarten ready to learn. The Senate action on these important education investments today will allow our important work to continue, and I look forward to signing this legislation.”
