Governor Kitzhaber statement on the Commission on Public Safety Report

(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber issued the following statement in response to the Commission on Public Safety report:

“The unanimous report by the Commission on Public Safety represents months of work by all three branches of state government to address costly trends that threaten to crowd out critical funds for local public safety and crime prevention. I applaud their hard work and thank the commissioners for producing bipartisan, data-driven policy packages that include averting the need for more 2,300 more prison beds at a cost of $600 million over ten years. I look forward to a robust discussion with the Legislature over practical solutions that protect public safety and achieve the corrections savings and reinvestments outlined in my budget.”
