Thank you, Rob, for the kind introduction. And thank you Principal Sproles for hosting us today.
Welcome back to school, Metzger Elementary! On this second day of school I think we all feel that jittery excitement that comes with the beginning of the school year. I certainly remember when I dropped my son off for his first day of school … (anecdote from Gov)
I want to extend a special welcome to Metzger’s incoming kindergartners. You are the Class of 2025, the year by which we have set the ambitious goal of ensuring a 100 percent graduation rate. That’s our commitment to you – that every single one of you, in every community in Oregon, will graduate from high school with the tools and skills to pursue your dreams in college and careers.
The challenge is for us adults to find the resources, the courage and the creativity to take what works best for some students, in some classrooms and schools, and do what is needed to deliver those same results to all students, in all classrooms and schools in Oregon.
Because we recognize that education starts at birth and continues through college and career training, we are knocking down barriers between early learning, elementary and secondary schools and higher education.
And we are supporting our world-class teachers, exemplified here in the Tigard-Tualatin School District, to provide a model for others help you along the way.
So welcome back to school Metzger. You join more than 650,000 elementary, secondary and post-secondary students this year who represent Oregon’s next innovators and entrepreneurs, its next generation of farmers and foresters, health care providers and public servants and possibly a governor or two. You are the source of my optimism for Oregon.
Have a great year!
