Governor Kitzhaber Announces Oregon Education Investment Team Members

(Salem) - Teachers, school administrators, children’s advocates, university researchers and business people are among the 13 Oregonians Governor Kitzhaber today announced will serve on his Oregon Education Investment Team.  The Governor will chair the Team charged with developing strategies to create a seamless zero to 20 education system that is integrated, efficient and accountable.

Created by Executive Order, the Team will propose policy and system changes and integrate recommendations from the Governor’s transition teams on early childhood success, K-12 and post-secondary education.  It will outline a budget and policy framework in a report due May 31, 2011.

“We are fortunate to have such a talented and committed group of Oregonians willing to step up to the challenge,” said Governor Kitzhaber.  “I am confident that together we can change course on education to ensure kids are ready to learn when they get to kindergarten, reading when they get out of first grade and have a seamless transition from high school to college and careers.”

The 13 members of the Oregon Education Investment Team are:

  • Governor John Kitzhaber, Chair
  • Ann Burgess, Teacher, Prairie Mountain School
  • Tom Cole, Founding Director of Kids Unlimited
  • Pam Curtis, Deputy Director of the Center for Evidence-based Policy at Oregon Health Science University
  • Matt Donegan, Co-Founder and Co-President of Forest Capital Parters
  • Michael Geisen, Teacher, Crook County Middle School
  • Dr. Sandy Husk, Superintendent of Salem-Keizer School District
  • Nori Juba, Managing Partner of Bend Capital Partners
  • Sue Levin, Executive Director of Stand for Children
  • Richard Sanders, Executive Director of Oregon Education Association
  • Ron Saxton, Executive Vice President of Jeld-Wen
  • Mary Spilde, President of Lane Community College
  • Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes, former Vice President of University Advancement at Oregon State University


The Governor also announced the creation of two design teams under the Oregon Education Investment Team:

  • The Early Learning Design Team will focus on a new model for early childhood and family investment for implementation in the second year of this biennium to ensure children are ready and able to learn when they get to kindergarten.  It will be headed by Lynne Saxton, CEO of ChristieCare.
  • The Performance-based Budget Design Team will focus on creating a unified, performance-based 0-20 budget model for consideration by the 2012 legislature.  It will be led by Duncan Wyse, President of the Oregon Business Council.

The Team will meet for the first time on Monday, March 28, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Governor’s conference room.
