Governor Kitzhaber signs Executive Order Declaring State of Emergency for Curry County

(SALEM, Ore.) –Governor Kitzhaber today declared a state of emergency for Curry County.  A signed executive order from the Governor declaring a state of emergency sets in motion a state and federal process for applying for federal disaster assistance.  The Governor is accelerating the arrival of state and federal disaster assistance teams in Curry County and has established a Governor’s Recovery Cabinet.

I want to get Curry County the financial help it needs to get back to work and start rebuilding their community immediately,” said Governor Kitzhaber.

At the Governor’s direction disaster assessment teams from Oregon Emergency Management and FEMA will be at Brookings Harbor Port Wednesday, March 16, to begin a three day process of gathering damage assessments in Curry County’s ports.   The ports received heavy damage caused by last Friday’s Tsunami waves that hit the Oregon coast. The damages have closed the Port indefinitely.

Assessments teams will report back to the Governor early next week with a final determination of the county’s qualifications for federal assistance.  If Curry County meets the federal criteria Governor Kitzhaber will immediately send a formal request to President Obama requesting a disaster declaration and federal assistance from FEMA.

“I appreciate the quick action by state officials and members of the community to move quickly,” said Governor Kitzhaber

Governor Kitzhaber’s Recovery Cabinet is made up of State Agencies that may have a role in the recovery process including, infrastructure repair, technical assistance, grants and loans to the community.

“My Recovery Cabinet will take the lead on getting Curry County up and running, but it will take all of us to make this happen,” said Governor Kitzhaber.

The Governor is also asking Oregonians to help with Curry County recovery efforts by making a donation to a local organization.  Governor Kitzhaber says while we focus on getting Curry County on their feet, we must not forget the people of Japan and the ongoing human tragedy there.    The Governor’s website has easy access to make donations to recovery and reconstruction efforts in Curry County and in Japan.
