Governor Kitzhaber names Steven Powers Deputy General Counsel
(SALEM, Ore.) — Governor Kitzhaber announced that Steven Powers joined the Governors Staff serving as the Deputy General Counsel.
Most recently, Mr. Powers served as Deputy District Attorney in Multnomah County, responsible for working with law enforcement on investigations, reviewing police reports for potential charges, prosecuting crimes on behalf of the State of Oregon.
“I am honored to join the Governor’s team and serve as Deputy General Counsel and public safety advisor to support the transformative changes that will continue to keep Oregonians safe and secure,” said Mr. Powers.
Mr. Powers served as Chairperson of the Oregon Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision and also served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Appellate Division of the Oregon Department of Justice, where he litigated cases on behalf of Oregon before the state appellate courts and the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Among other cases, he was part of the briefing and argument team that successfully defended Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Powers earned a B.A. from Western State College of Colorado and his J.D. from Willamette University College of Law.
