Governor Kitzhaber announces new legislative director
(SALEM, Ore.) — Governor Kitzhaber today announced the appointment of Dmitri Palmateer to the staff position of Legislative Director, effective July 26, 2011. Experienced in state and national politics, Mr. Palmateer will succeed Brian Shipley who has accepted the position of Director of External Affairs at Forest Capital Partners, LLC.
Mr. Palmateer currently serves as the Statewide Business Liaison for U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley. Previously, Mr. Palmateer served in several staff positions in the Oregon Legislature. In 2008-09, he was Chief of Staff for the House Democratic Caucus. He previously served as then-Speaker Merkley’s Legislative Director and the Legislative Director for the House Democratic Caucus. He started his career teaching history at Willamette University.
“Dmitri brings strong working relationships with Democrats and Republicans in both houses of Oregon’s Legislature,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “We are fortunate to have Dmitri joining our team as we gear up for the 2012 legislative session.”
Mr. Palmateer earned Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees in American History from State University of New York at Binghamton and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from Willamette University. He is a graduate of Roseburg High School and lives in Salem with his wife, Kara Ritzheimer, and their two children.
Mr. Shipely’s departure was expected. He joined the Governor’s staff to serve as Legislative Director through the 2011 session.
“Brian played a key role successfully moving forward an ambitious agenda for job creation, education, and health care,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “We will miss him and wish him well in his new position at Forest Capital.”
