Governor Kitzhaber announces vacancy of Justice of the Peace for Harney County
(SALEM, Ore.) — Governor Kitzhaber announced today that he is accepting applications for the upcoming vacancy of the Justice of the Peace position in Harney County. The vacancy will be created by the retirement of Justice of the Peace Dewey A. Newton, effective September 1, 2011. The Governor will fill this vacancy by appointment.
The Governor’s Office is now accepting applications. ORS 51.240 provides that at the time of appointment, the candidate must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Oregon. ORS 51.240(2) further states that at the time of appointment, the candidate must “be a resident of or have a principle office in the justice of the peace district in which the justice court is located.” ORS 51.240(3) provides the required length of time for the residency requirements.
Governor Kitzhaber fills vacancies based on merit. He encourages applications from individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
