Governor Kitzhaber signs bill restoring rail service between Lane and Coos counties
June 20, 2011
It’s great to be here with you today to sign SB 3596. I am a big supporter of rail for our state because it’s a cost-effective way to move goods and add capacity in a fiscally constrained time and it will help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil and improve air quality in Oregon.
SB 3596 is a part of that commitment: it will help us take a big step forward toward restoring rail service on an integral corridor for the Port of Coos Bay and Oregon’s economy.
With so many businesses in the area struggling already from the economic recession, the closure of this link made a bad situation worse, especially considering that local firms had shipped about 6,000 rail-loads per year just half a decade ago.
By reestablishing this line, we will reconnect the only natural deepwater coastal harbor port between San Francisco and Puget Sound to the national rail line, while will help us improve our state’s mobility, providing economic opportunity and creating jobs in Southwest Oregon.
I want to thank Representative Roblan and Senator Verger for all their work on this bill, as well as Representative DeFazio for all the amazing work he’s done within the state and federally to make this restoration happen. And before I sign the bill, I want to give the opportunity to say a few words…Representative DeFazio…
