Scappoose, OR—The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a $8,400 civil penalty to BB Wood Products, LLC (Beaver Bark) for discharging leachate from its composting facility mixed with stormwater into a wetland that drains into Scappoose Creek. The facility is located at 5400 West Lane Road, in Scappoose.

DEQ issued this penalty because leachate from composting may contain harmful pollutants, including pathogens, nitrogen compounds, and phenols. When discharged into waters of the state, these pollutants can harm aquatic life; contaminate drinking water; and impair recreational, commercial, and agricultural uses of the water body.
