Garibaldi, OR—The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a $6,847 civil penalty to Garibaldi Leasing and Development, Inc. for causing pollution to waters of the state and operating without a required water quality certification and permit. DEQ inspectors observed sediment and turbid stormwater discharging from a construction site to Hobson Creek (also known as Whitney Creek) in April and May 2017. The site is located at 102 Arizona Way in Garibaldi, OR.

DEQ issued this penalty because turbidity in the water column and deposited sediments can degrade water quality and may harm aquatic life by covering up food sources, abrading fish gills, and smothering fish eggs and other organisms living in the river.
