Milton-Freewater, OR—Oregon residents may dispose of a wide variety of household hazardous waste items for free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at Humbert Refuse & Recycling, located at 54841 Hwy 332 in Milton-Freewater. Pre-registration is not required for household hazardous waste.
Common items to be collected include aerosol cans, antifreeze, engine cleaners, fluorescent tubes, household batteries, motor oil, paint, pesticides, solvents, mercury containing devices like thermostats or (silver-colored) thermometers, herbicides and wood preservatives. These items should be kept in their original containers if possible. Persons should not bring explosives, ammunition, sharps or products that contain radioactive waste, such as smoke detectors.
Also, small businesses and farms in the Milton-Freewater area can dispose of hazardous items for a fee. To be eligible, small businesses may not generate more than 220 pounds of hazardous waste (about ½ drum monthly or about five drums -- 2200 pounds annually). All mercury from businesses, ranches and farms will be accepted free of charge. Small business and farm wastes will be collected on Friday, September 22. Pre-registration is required by September 15 for agricultural pesticide waste and small business waste disposal. To pre-register, call 971-401-0367.
All collected material will be handled by a state hazardous waste contractor. The materials will be screened for usable products, such as household cleaners, paint, and other household products that will be made available to local residents for reuse. Remaining materials will be sent to recycling, energy recovery or incineration facilities.
