Murphy, OR—The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has fined Three Rivers School District $7,500 for wastewater violations at Fleming Middle School and Hidden Valley High School.

Wastewater from Fleming Middle School exceeded standards in its wastewater permit for ammonia in April 2017. The district also discharged treated wastewater from both schools from May 1 to May 11. The permit prohibits wastewater discharges into the creek discharged between May 1 and Oct. 31 because of its low flow. The district's permit allows it to operate a wastewater collection, treatment, control and disposal system and discharge treated wastewater to public waters between Nov. 1 and April 30 only.

Pollutant limits are set to protect human health and aquatic life and following the terms of a permit is essential to protecting water quality.

The district has until Dec. 3 to appeal the penalty.
