Scoring Writing Work Samples - Workshop Materials

Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3

Design for Workshops

The workshops described below are designed to be delivered by school district personnel using ODE developed materials.

  • Level 1-Overview of the Essential Skill of Writing:A 30 - 45 minute broad, general workshop for designed to be presented by a local facilitator to a wide variety of audiences including teachers, administrators, school board, parents and community groups.
  • Level 2 - Introductory Training – Using the Writing Scoring Guide: Two 2 - 2.5 hour workshops, one for English Language Arts teachers and one for content area teachers. Both are designed to be presented by a local facilitator to high school teachers.
  • Level 3 - In-Depth Training – Using the Writing Scoring Guide for Essential Skills Work Samples: Six 3 - 4 hour workshops, three for English Language Arts teachers and three for Content area teachers. Both are designed to be presented by a local facilitator to high school teachers.

Note: There is no Level 4 training for Writing. Information on developing effective writing prompts is included in Level 2 training.


Level 1 Overview

Focus of Workshop

  • Understand the requirement for proficiency in the Essential Skill of Writing to earn a diploma
  • Understand the 3 options to demonstrate proficiency (OAKS, approved standardized tests, and work samples)
  • Understand what a work sample looks like and experience applying the scoring guide to 2 student work samples

Level 2 – Introduction for High School Teachers

Focus of Workshops

  • Awareness of Oregon requirements for the Essential Skill of Writing and high school diploma
  • Understanding of Official Oregon Writing Scoring Guide
  • Practice applying Scoring Guide to sample student papers
  • Awareness of different types and uses of scoring guide

Level 3 – In-Depth Practice for High School Teachers

Review of requirements for Essential Skill of Writing

  • In-depth practice using Official Oregon Writing Scoring Guide
  • Practice applying Scoring Guide to sample student papers with emphasis on accuracy
  • Awareness of Common Core State Standards for Writing and how they align with Oregon’s scoring guide
