| Private Forests |
|
The Private Forests Program integrates what was previously known as the Forest Practices
Program and the Forestry Assistance Program. The services provided encompass various
aspects of promoting and supporting landowners in improving forest health, timber, fish and
wildlife habitat, soil and water quality, recreation opportunities and aesthetics of private forests
through information, technical assistance, financial incentives and regulation.

Landowners with forest resources in Central Oregon have help available to them. The best fit
depends on what the resources are and what the landowner wants to do. Oregon Department
of Forestry provides assistance through local Stewardship Foresters.
Current programs supported by our Private Forest Program include:
- Technical assistance: We provide consultation advice and information to landowners on the management of forest resources and their potential including resource assessments related to forest health issues, forest engineering assistance, and education on forestry Best Management Practices.
- Stewardship Plans: We provide assistance to landowners in the development of ten year action plans which identify landowner objectives, forest and other resources present, and give management recommendations for actions. These plans may include or be included in habitat plans, and NRCS conservation plans which are required to be eligible for a variety of cost-share funding assistance programs supported by other agencies such as NRCS and Oregon Department of Fish & Game.
- Bark Beetle Mitigation Grants: This program provides landowners with cost-share funding assistance for thinning and hazardous fuels treatment projects with management objectives directed towards bark beetle infestation prevention and mitigation.
- National Fire Plan Grants: This program provides landowners with cost-share funding assistance for thinning and hazardous fuels treatment projects with management objectives related to wildfire hazardous fuels mitigation. Program eligibility is dependent upon whether your property lies within wildland-urban interface areas of a recognized Community At Risk as identified in local Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
