Structure burned at Deer Creek Fire
|
FireFree is a multi-year educational campaign that addresses the ways to reduce the risk of damage by wildfires in Deschutes County and beyond. The campaign aims to educate the public about wildfire safety and promote behaviors and attitudes that translate into creating defensible space around homes and businesses. Organizers hope to prevent huge losses like those that occurred in the 1996 Skeleton Fire and the 1990 Awbrey Hall Fire.

The Firewise Communities program is a national, multi-agency effort designed to reach beyond the fire service by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, and others in the effort to protect people, property, and natural resources from the risk of wildland fire - before a fire starts. Elements of the Firewise Communities program include the Firewise Communities Workshop series, the Firewise Communities/USA Recognition Program, an interactive website, public education, and support for fire organizations and community groups. The initiative is directed and sponsored by federal agencies and national organizations that are responsible for wildland fire management in the United States.
