Snow doesn't hamper SOLV Day efforts on the Tillamook State Forest
04/22/2008

On Saturday, April 19th, the Oregon Department of Forestry joined over 100 groups and agencies to participate in the annual SOLV IT! event.
Sponsored by SOLV, this yearly happening focuses on cleaning up illegal dumpsites, restoring watersheds, and enhancing natural areas.

For the sixteenth year in a row, the Oregon Department of Forestry hosted a large-scale dumpsite clean-up in the eastern portion of the Tillamook State Forest.

As with most activities in the Tillamook State Forest this spring, SOLV Day was impacted by the heavy snowfall, unusual for late April in the Oregon Coast Range.

“This year was different from our typical SOLV Day because of the snow,” noted site coordinator Stephanie Beall.  “We’ve never been able to have snowball fights in between loading up the dumpsters before and we couldn’t reach all of our clean-up sites but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit.”

At the end of the day, 33 volunteers and 15 Oregon Department of Forestry employees removed 12,000 pounds of garbage, 15 cubic yards of scrap metal, 3 cars, and over 100 tires from the Tillamook State Forest.

“We had fun and got a lot of good work done.  All of the folks who help out want to make a difference in the environment, rain or shine,” added clean-up group leader Wayne Brown.

The Tillamook State Forest SOLV IT! project was supported by in-kind donations from SWATCO Sanitary Service of Banks and Sweets Septic of Manzanita.

Organizations that participated in the clean-up effort were:
  • Jolly Jeepers
  • Mid-Valley Crawlers
  • Oregon Equestrian Trails
  • Portland United Mountain Pedalers
