The Oregon Department of Forestry reported today that a wind shift on Thursday afternoon carried smoke from a prescribed forest burn east of Newport into the town.
Department forester Doug Grafe said that at 2 p.m. when the 15-acre burn on private forestlands 10 miles east of Newport was ignited, conditions were favorable to lift smoke up and away from populated areas.
"Unfortunately, the wind shifted shortly after ignition," he said, "and pushed smoke across Newport from late afternoon into the evening."
The burn was conducted to prepare the site for reforestation and also to reduce the fuel load to lower the risk of a wildfire in the future.
