The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has selected Steve Wilson to head up its North Cascade District. Serving previously as state fire prevention manager in ODF’s Salem headquarters, Wilson took over as district forester on Feb. 1.

The North Cascade District manages the 47,871-acre Santiam State Forest and provides wildfire protection to 652,000 acres of public and private forestlands across Multnomah, Clackamas and Marion counties. As district forester, Wilson also oversees assistance outreach to private forestland owners, and ensures that best management practices are followed on forestland in compliance with the Forest Practices Act.

“Steve brings a solid background to the district forester position,” ODF’s Northwest Oregon Area Director Mike Bordelon said.

As fire prevention manager from 2009-2011, Wilson directed fire safety outreach to forest landowners and operators statewide. He spearheaded efforts to recover firefighting costs whenever negligence or other rule violations were determined to have played a role in causing a fire.

Implementation of the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act was also a major focus of the prevention manager job. The Act enlists the aid of property owners to reduce the vulnerability of urban and suburban properties to encroachment by wildfire.

From 2008-2009, Wilson served as assistant to the Northwest Oregon Area director, a position in which he helped coordinate multiple programs for five ODF districts, as well as the South Fork Forest Camp and the J.E. Schroeder Seed Orchard.

In a career with ODF that began in the 1980s, he has worked in various field positions leading fire protection operations as well as enforcing forest practices rules. Wilson holds a baccalaureate from Oregon State University.
