Oregon Forestland Canopy Cover by Percent
Return to the Forest Atlas main page
Canopy cover is the proportion of land covered by the outermost perimeter of forest trees.
Canopy cover is an important factor in assessing biological diversity and health of forested ecosystems. Canopy cover is constantly changing as a result of vegetation growth and decay, and natural disturbances such and insects and disease, fire, windstorms, floods, volcanic eruptions, and climate change. Human alteration of Oregon’s forests predates European settlement, but has increased significantly over the past 150+ years of statehood. Changes in canopy cover can serve as and indicator of changes to ecosystems and as indicators of the status of other organisms and ecosystem processes that are difficult to measure directly.
