Weekly construction updates are available online or you can sign up to receive electronic updates by sending your email address to elizabeth.craig@odot.state.or.us (please indicate the project name in your email). The weekly construction report is released each Friday and details work planned for the following week and associated traffic impacts.

Project Overview
The project area includes the OR 212/224 and 82nd Drive intersection; the I-205 northbound on-ramp from OR 212/224; and the I-205 southbound ramps to and from OR 212/224. Project elements include:
  • Re-striping OR 212/224 to add a third westbound lane (a combination through and right-turn lane) from the west side of the UPRR viaduct to SE 82nd Drive. (This will involve removing the curb "bulb-out" on OR 212/224 at 82nd Drive.)
  • Providing two signalized right-turn lanes from OR 212/224 to the I-205 northbound on-ramp. This will be done by constructing a right-turn only lane and re-striping the existing through lane so it becomes a combination through/right-turn lane.
  • Providing two right-turn lanes from the I-205 southbound off-ramp to OR 212/224 eastbound by adding an exclusive right-turn lane.
  • Installing a traffic signal at the intersection of OR 212/224 and the I-205 southbound ramps.
  • Constructing a 10-foot multi-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians between 82nd Drive and the I-205 northbound on-ramp.

Purpose & Need
Congestion is an ongoing issue along this segment of OR 212/224 (Clackamas Highway) with frequent westbound back-ups that can extend more than three-fourths of a mile from SE 82nd Drive to SE 106th Avenue. Contributing to congestion is the un-signalized operations of the I-205 southbound on- and off-ramps. In addition, there is a high incidence of accidents at the SE 82nd Drive intersection.
This project will provide immediate safety improvements and congestion relief to better manage traffic through this statewide freight corridor. Planned construction of the Sunrise JTA Project will provide long-term congestion relief by building a new road from the intersection of the Milwaukie Expressway and I-205 to SE 122nd Avenue. This new road is expected to provide significant congestion relief to OR 212/224, I-205 and 82nd Drive by attracting nearly 20,000 daily users. The Sunrise JTA mainline is expected to start construction in 2014, if not sooner.

The project is expected to go to bid in mid-June 2011, with construction starting in July and being substantively complete by October 2011. The contractor will come back in spring 2012 to finish any work not completed this season.
Construction Impacts
Except for the westbound right-turn lane to the I-205 northbound on-ramp, any construction work requiring lane closures will be done at night between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Work will also take place during the day, but it primarily will be off the roadway with some sidewalk closures. In addition, there will be some nighttime closures of the I-205 northbound and southbound on- and off-ramps, with detours in place (only one ramp will be closed at a time).
