Relapsing fever is spread to humans by the bites of soft-bodied ticks or human body lice. The illness is caused by the bacteria
Borrelia, and is characterized by a recurring fever.

Health care providers and clinical laboratories are
required by law to report cases and suspect cases of relapsing fever within
one working day upon identification. Call 971-673-1111 to reach the state health department doctor on call.
