New rules for electrologists and tattoo artists in effect

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

In 2011, the Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 2013, creating the Board of Body Art Practitioners, now the Board of Electrologists and Body Art Practitioners, under the Health Licensing Office to allow for regulation and oversight of body piercing, tattooing and electrology. After the bill was passed, a series of Oregon Administrative Rules were put in place to allow the HLO to administer the program, issue licenses, investigate complaints and inspect facilities.

At the request of the Board, a Rules Advisory Committee (RAC) was appointed and met Aug. 2, 2016 to review and make recommendations regarding the current rules. It was determined that electrology and tattoo rules would move forward for Board approval Sept. 12, 2016.

The Board approved the new electrology and tattooing rules in November 2016 and they went into effect January 2017.
