Introduction

The following resources contain reports, surveys, data and other research related to the status of disparities among people of color. They provide both local and national context for issues such as health care, standard of living, and education, as well as examining the demographics of these popuations.

Local Resources

• 2009 Oregon Physician Workforce Survey - Oregon Department of Human Services: This survey looks into the dynamics of capacity; demographics; practice characteristics; acceptance of Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance; future practice plans; and attitudes toward specific health policy issues in the Oregon physician community.
• Communities of Color in Multnomah County: An Unsettling Profile - Coalition of Communities of Color and Portland State University: This report documents the experiences of communities of color in Multnomah County, as well as community-specific reports on the African American, African immigrant and refugee, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latino, Native American and Slavic communities.
• Indian Health Issues - Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board: A non-profit tribal advisory organization serving the forty-three federally recognized tribes of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
• Multnomah County Health Department Reports: Reports assessing the health of Multnomah County's residents and environment.
• Oregon's Uninsured: Analysis of the 2008 American Community Survey - Oregon Health Authority, Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research: The ACS surveys three million U.S. addresses per year, including roughly 35,000 Oregonians. In 2008 the survey began providing health insurance coverage estimates for reliable, comparable statistics on health insurance coverage at the sub-state level.
• Pew Hispanic Center - Demographic Profile of Hispanics in Oregon, 2008: This profile contains demographic and economic facts about the Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations in the state of Oregon.
• State Health Facts: A division of the Kaiser Family Foundation examining racial and ethnic disparities.
• The State of Black Oregon - Urban League of Portland: This report contains a stark inventory of statistics that show a persistent gap in living standards between black and white Oregonians.

National Resources

• The Condition of Education 2010: High School dropout rates through 2008.
• Healthy People 2020: Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.
• Minority Health - Kaiser Family Foundation: The Kaiser Family Foundation is a non-profit, private operating foundation focusing on the major health care issues facing the U.S., as well as the U.S. role in global health policy.
• Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities - Center for Disease Control and Prevention: The Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (OMHD) aims to accelerate CDC's health impact in the U.S population and to eliminate health disparities for vulnerable populations identified to be at-risk for health disparities.
• Pew Hispanic Center: A nonpartisan research organization that seeks to improve understanding of the U.S. Hispanic population and to chronicle Latinos' growing impact on the nation.
• PolicyLink: A national research and action institute advancing economic and social equity
• Surveillance of Health Status in Minority Communities - MMRW: Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health Across the U.S.
• The National Center for Higher Education Management Systems - State Challenges for Increasing College Access and Success: This report, comprised of key indicators and projections related to postsecondary attainment, is designed to help institutional, system, and state leaders advance a conversation about the urgent need to increase college access and success for all students.

• American Human Development Project - A Century Apart: An entire century of human progress separates the worst-off from the best-off groups within the U.S., according to the latest update of the American Human Development (HD) Index.
• Kaiser Family Foundation - Putting Women's Health Care on the Map: Examining racial and ethnic disparities of women at the state level.
• Publications from the Joint Center Health Policy Institute: Engages in research and information dissemination; policy workshops, forums, and conferences; technical assistance for community-based organizations; media relations; and outreach to minority organizations.
• Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - Commission to Build a Healthier America: An identification of the greatest opportunities to improve the health of all Americans, including improving nutrition, physical activity and early childhood development; eliminating tobacco use; creating healthy places; and establishing accountability for health impact in all policies.

• Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care - Institute of Medicine: This research demonstrates significant variation in the rates of medical procedures by race, even when insurance status, income, age, and severity of conditions are comparable.
