OHCS Celebrates National Preservation Month

May is National Historic Preservation Month when special attention is paid to preserving historic properties across the United States and throughout Oregon.

Over the years Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) has supported many historic preservation projects. The following are some great examples of how OHCS and its local affordable housing partners are helping restore and preserve some of Oregon's historically significant buildings, while at the same time, providing affordable rental housing opportunities to some of Oregon's most vulnerable citizens.
   

Musolf Manor (Portland)
Originally built in 1910 Musolf Manor is located in the Old Town portion of NW Portland. The building was restored in 2009 by Innovative Housing. This historic hotel provides 95 units of affordable studio housing for very low-income singles.

State funding invested in the project includes Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC); a Low-Income Weatherization grant; and Housing Development Grant Program (Trust Fund).

Grand Apartments (Roseburg)
Originally built in 1910 the Grand Hotel in downtown Roseburg was preserved and rehabilitated in 2009 by NeighborWorks Umpqua, a Douglas County non-profit formerly known as Umpqua Community Development Corporation. The historic building now includes five ground floor commercial spaces and 37 units of affordable housing for low and very-low income families and homeless persons. The housing units are a mixture of studios, one bedroom, and two bedroom units.

Funding for the project includes Historic Tax Credits from State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO); Housing Development Grant Program (Trust Fund); Oregon Affordable Housing Tax Credits (OAHTC); and LIHTC.

The Admiral (Portland)
The Admiral Apartments in downtown Portland was originally built in 1909 and was preserved and rehabilitated by REACH Community Development Corporation in 2010. The 37 unit apartment building is home to very low-income seniors and disabled households.

State funding for the project includes Historic Tax Credits from SHPO; LIHTC; and OAHTC Loan with Network for Oregon Affordable Housing.

Hotel North Bend (North Bend)
Hotel North Bend was originally built in 1921 and is located in downtown North Bend. With funding from the State of Oregon and others, NeighborWorks Umpqua completed restoration on the building in 2009. The 33-unit building primarily houses low and very low-income families and physically disabled households who earn 60% or less than the median family income.

Funding for the project included Historic Tax Credits from SHPO; Housing Development Grant Program (Trust Fund); OAHTC; a Low-Income Weatherization grant; and LIHTC.

Grand Apartments (Medford)
The Grand Apartments was originally built in 1915 and is located in downtown Medford. In March of 2010 restoration of the building was completed by the Housing Authority of Jackson County with funding from the State of Oregon. The 26-unit building is home to families who earn 60% or less than the median family income.

Funding for the project included federal HOME funds and Housing Development Grant Program (Trust Fund).

The buildings that featured here are just a few of the many historic preservation projects that OHCS has funded throughout the State of Oregon. OHCS is proud to have funded so many historic preservation projects and to play a part in helping ensure these buildings are preserved for the benefit of future generations.
