What is Rock Snot?
rock snot
Rock snot is native to eastern North America and Eurasia and was introduced to New Zealand. It is a species of diatom that can form large mats. It is not considered a significant human risk, but it can affect stream habitats and sources of food for fish and make recreational activities unpleasant. The microscopic algae can be spread in a single drop of water.

Where?
Rock snot can be found in warm water and on the bottom of lakes, rivers and streams.
Lookalike?
It's known as rock snot for a reason.
What can you do?
Prevent the spread. Before leaving a water body, remove obvious clumps of algae. If you find algae later, don't wash it down the drain. Dispose of algae in a trash container. Clean and scrub all items in hot water or bleach/antiseptic solution.
