RideOregonRide.com/Madras is a site just for cyclists hosted by Travel Oregon. It shows restaurants, hotels and bike shops along the route. You can post comments and read posts from other cyclists.
Road Construction: SW Bear Drive is getting a facelift, about mile marker 3 on the Bikeway map. The road will be closed to all traffic including bicycles June 22nd- 23rd. On other dates there is a "road closed" sign (at Belmont, about mile 3, after railroad tracks). You can ride through it. Expect gravel patches. It is scheduled to be repaved and completed by end of June.
The Madras Mountain Views Scenic Bikeway is a 30-mile loop through high desert, showcasing basalt palisades and opportunities to see many of the Majestic Cascade Mountains from one spot; including the Three Sisters Mountains Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood and Three Fingered Jack.
The bikeway starts and finishes in downtown Madras, a friendly small town with several wonderful restaurants and hotels.
The route takes you to overlooks above Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook. These overlooks are great places for seeing eagles, raptors and deer. This section of the route has almost no traffic.
The route passes through Culver, Metolius and Madras, offering a variety of amenities, giving riders a chance to enjoy the small towns and buy refreshments along the route.
The Bikeway is on paved roads with light traffic. This ride is suitable for most recreational cyclists comfortable biking on roads.
The mild winters makes this a great year round ride, with some of the best days to ride it in the many sunny and warm clear days of winter and spring and fall.
