The ride from Salem to Buena Vista runs along the Willamette River and passed the Independence Bridge. A short detour over the bridge leads to Independence. The town features a large downtown park, restaurants and a bed and breakfast.

South of the bridge, the route passes through the Ankeny Wildlife Refuge. Canada geese winter here and their calls are usually the loudest noises heard on this stretch.

The route turns east to Jefferson, once the mint growing capital of the world. The town has restaurants and a small grocery store, but no overnight accommodations. The route climbs up to Scravel Hill. Look for a  pioneer cemetery and take in views of the valley.
Oregon's capital city is a busy town of 150,000 people. Downtown Salem has many stores and several bike shops, as well as restaurants and hotels.

As in any town, defensive riding is always advised. Please see the cue sheets for more information on riding in Salem.

A short detour from the main bikeway route in Salem brings you to the green lawns surrounding the State Capitol, an excellent place to rest tired legs. Stone plaques set in the mall sidewalks list establishment dates for each of Oregon's counties. Other plaques contain historical quotes and facts.

Riverfront Park parallels the route on Front Street. Stop for a picnic and take in the view of the Willamette River.
