A stretch of brambles and tall grass on the Bank-Vernonia State Trail is now paved and open for hikers. Approximately 1 1/4 miles long, this section starts near Banks and passes through Stub Stewart Park.
Contractor Dan Banzer did an admirable job of opening up this stretch while doing minimal clearing along the trail. Much of the existing vegetation was saved and incorporated into the final landscaping. One of the project goals was to maintain a rural feeling and ensure the visitor safety.
The Washington County Planning Department required that the trail surface be low enough to allow flood waters to flow across unimpeded. This was accomplished by keeping the paved surface approximately level with the surrounding land.
