Although not a history of Wheeler County, but rather a “brief narrative of a life style that has vanished,” the publication includes stories about the development of Wheeler County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Contents for the publication were collected from oral histories, newspapers, and primary sources from the Oregon Historical Society.
Fussner, F. Smith, Ed. Glimpses of Wheeler County’s Past: An Early History of North Central Oregon. Portland: Binford & Mort, 1975. Maps, photographs, illustrations, index. 134 pages.
This publication is a compilation of brief thematic histories contributed by members of the Wheeler County Historical Commission.  Materials for the histories was compiled from secondary and primary sources, including oral histories.  Chapter topics include a geological history of the county, Native American history, communities in the county, sheep ranching, homesteading, and transportation.
Ontko, Andrew G. Trails to the Ochoco Valley. Prineville: Crook County Historical Society, 1992. Illustrations, biographical index. 121 pages.
A general history of Crook County first written as the author’s senior history thesis project in high school, with special emphasis on early Euro-American settlement of the county, the Ochoco Valley, Native American history of the area, and the sheep and cattle wars.  Information is compiled from secondary sources, and primary sources such as journals, letters, and diaries.  Some information on Wheeler County is included.
Stinchfield, Janet L. and McLaren E. Stinchfield. The History of Wheeler County, Oregon. Dallas, Texas: Taylor Publishing Co., 1983.  Maps, photographs. 256 pages.
A brief, general history of Wheeler County beginning with Native American inhabitation through the mid-twentieth century.  Topics include a geological history of the area, early Euro-American settlement, and brief histories of local families.  History articles are compiled from secondary and primary sources, while family histories were submitted by living family members.
