Textile Basics

Textile-based objects are some of the most fragile and vulnerable within historic collections. The preservation and care of these objects demand an understanding of how and why they deteriorate and how to best preserve them. By the end of this workshop, attendees will understand the fundamental principles of textile care and preservation - from object handling and proper display and storage techniques, to choosing appropriate archival materials and identifying agents of deterioration. Workshop instructor Kathleen Daly has a BS from Oregon State University in Merchandising and Management with a Historic and Cultural Studies option and an MA in Fashion and Textiles Studies: History, Theory and Museum Practice from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Attendees will spend time digging into metadata and follow that with information about doing digitization in-house vs. outsourcing and the care and handling of materials during digitization projects. Workshop instructor Leigh Grinstead is Digital Services Consultant at LYRASIS and has more than 20 years of experience working in and managing museums, and more than a decade working with digital collections.
