Federal and State Compliance for Historic and Archaeological Resources
Purpose of the Compliance Program

Laws are in place to make sure that federal and state projects don't carelessly destroy cultural resources.
 
In cooperation with the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) works with federal agencies and those agencies receiving federal funds to assist them in complying with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The Oregon SHPO is also responsible for assisting local governments in compliance with ORS 358.653.
 
Our Review and Compliance team actively works with tribal governments and local communities, particularly Tribal Historic Preservation Offices and Certified Local Governments, to assist in these endeavors.
 

Agency Responsibilities
State and federal agencies that undertake projects must “take into account” how their project activities will affect historic and archaeological resources. Common projects include construction, rehabilitation, demolition, licensing, permitting, or transfer of public lands.

SHPO's Role

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) provides guidance to agencies and governments who are affected by these laws.
 
Each year we review over 3,000 development projects and their potential effects on archaeological and historical sites. We will comment on projects within 30 days after receiving the submission.
 
I just need a letter from the SHPO.
