Rx Play Exercise Specialist Conversation Guide
One of the Rx Play Program objectives is to create a “warm-handoff” between the medical system and park and recreation system, with a “push” from the medical system and a “pull” from the park and recreation system by connecting participant families with their local recreation centers. Rx Play Program participants are recruited into the process by primary care clinicians at participating medical offices. The medical offices send over completed prescription forms for each new recruit to the appropriate park and recreation department. This guide is intended for use by park and recreation exercise specialists in making recruitment follow-up phone calls to each parent included on the Rx Play prescription form. The primary intent of this phone call is to get the youth signed up to participate in a physical activity program of their choice at a close-to-home park and recreation facility.

As we roll out the Rx Play project, it is essential that park and recreation administrators keep adequate records for determining the overall program effectiveness and to make program improvements over time. This spreadsheet is intended for use by park and recreation exercise specialists in tracking the progress of program participants through the recruitment process.

| Motivational Interviewing Technique Training for Rx Play |
|
Motivational interviewing is highly beneficial for engaging families in the Portland Rx Play Program. Below are links to two interrelated online training modules (developed by Kaiser Permanente and offered free of charge to the public). These modules contain motivational interviewing techniques for addressing weight management issues. The two training modules may be used separately or together and can be accessed at the following web link. Although developed for medical professionals, the training modules can also inform park and recreation exercise specialists on how to effectively recruit Rx Play Program participants.
Motivational Interviewing Technique Training for Rx Play
The website requires first and last name, email address, and whether or not the user is a Kaiser Permanente employee. This information will be used only for demonstration of the training module’s benefit to the community, and for infrequent announcement of future publicly available related learning modules. Once the user logs into the Pediatric Overweight module, they are given the option to either begin the module, or explore the Brief Negotiation Roadmap.
-
Pediatric Overweight (4 hour course with interactive components)
Learn ways to build your confidence and effectiveness when talking about weight management. Using this online interactive program, you can learn and practice the Brief Negotiation (BN) method with realistic simulated patient encounters. The BN method focuses on building skills to enhance your clinical style, assess readiness to change, amplify patient’s motivation, and work effectively with challenging patients. This program applies BN principles by having the user engage in a dynamic, interactive conversation with the patient. As the user chooses from 3 response choices, they receive feedback from the “motivation meter” and the coaching corner.
